Google CEO Sundar Pichai: 'PM Modi Urged Us to Ensure AI Benefits the People of India'

In a major advancement for India’s tech ecosystem, global leaders Google and Nvidia have revealed plans to enhance their collaboration in the country, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI). This announcement followed a roundtable meeting between Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held on Sunday at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel.

The meeting was part of Modi's three-day visit to the United States, during which he met with leaders from US companies at the forefront of advanced technologies, including AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors. Both Pichai and Huang commended Modi's vision for a "Digital India" and highlighted the transformative potential of AI across sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture.

Speaking after the meeting, Pichai attenuated Modi's dedication to leveraging AI for the benefit of Indian society. “The Prime Minister has articulated a clear vision to ensure that AI serves the people of India. He encourages us to explore how AI can transform sectors such as healthcare and education while also ensuring the necessary infrastructure to support this transition,” Pichai remarked. He also mentioned that Google is committed to increasing its AI investments in India.

Pichai highlighted the company’s commitment to "Make in India" and "Design in India," noting that the Prime Minister has consistently encouraged Google to focus on local AI applications. “We look forward to doing more in India, especially in response to the Prime Minister's challenge to create AI solutions tailored to the country's unique needs," Pichai stated.

Similarly, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stressed India's potential to lead in AI adoption, citing the nation's wealth of computer science talent and vibrant startup ecosystem. “India is home to some of the world's brightest minds, and AI offers a tremendous opportunity for the country," Huang remarked.

He also outlined Nvidia’s plans to deepen its engagement in India, particularly through partnerships aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure. Nvidia has already teamed up with Yotta Data Services, which plans to expand its GPU resources to 32,768 units by 2025 to accommodate the increasing demand for AI workloads.

Huang also spoke about Nvidia’s partnerships with Indian academic institutions, noting that all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) now feature an Nvidia AI Centre of Excellence. "We are equipping professionals and students to navigate the complexities of AI. This is a defining moment for India to harness the transformative potential of AI in unprecedented ways," he stated.

Both leaders also recognised Prime Minister Modi's keen interest in AI’s potential. Huang praised the Prime Minister's curiosity and active engagement with the subject, saying, "Each time I meet him, his enthusiasm to explore AI and its role in shaping India's future is evident."
